Flower-Method

The flower-method can be used to develop an idea further and to combine it with other ideas. A best possible outcome can be achieved with 10-12 participants. The method is a visual reflection of: what, who, how and when is needed.

Organisation

  • Duration
    Medium (about 30-60 minutes)
  • Complexity
    Simple
  • Group size
    1 to 20 persons

This activity is suitable online.

Description Long

For this method an idea, which is written on a big round paper, serves as initial position. To elaborate on that idea the answers to the following points: who?, where?, when? and how?, are written on smaller circles. Subsequently these will be attached to the big round paper, which will be hung up on an empty wall. All participants then should present their ideas to the group. In a plenum the group decides, which ideas pick up similar topics and forms pairs to develop these ideas further, in an additional phase. This way an initial idea can be combined and further developed.

Preparation

  1. Wall with enough space.
  2. Cut enough big and small circles.
  3. Provide writing utensils and adhesive tape.

Online: make sure there is a way that people can collect ideas for the aspects "who, where, when, how". E.g. use a digital whiteboard or prepare documents to share.

Execution

  1. Hand out the circles.
  2. Write down the answers.
  3. Present the ideas within the group.
  4. Plenum.

Hints from experience

It is important to check regularly how much more time the participants need during the execution of the task.
