Unlike massive Hollywood movies, small film productions seldom have the resources to influence the lighting conditions with dozens of artificial lamps. Most television productions make do with a handheld light or lightbox with three individual lights.

Low-budget film projects often utilise the existing light (natural/artificial). The creative use of light sources is decisive for the quality of the recorded footage.

Preparation

Check filming location, weather and light. Test and pack the hardware, e.g., lights, reflectors. Practice light engineering.

Execution

Pick a well-lit spot for shoots, for example, during interviews. 

• Avoid situations with backlight. Close the curtains or blinds if this is unavoidable.
• Use the natural light that comes through the windows. Utilise the room lighting if needed. Manually adjust the white balance if the light conditions are a challenge (a mixture of artificial and natural light).
