Evaluation grid – (Inter)connected Media Learning

The assessment grid is a tool for the structured evaluation of projects or creative work. It provides clearly defined criteria and indicators to ensure that feedback is transparent, consistent, and fair.

Organisation

  • Duration
    Short (up to 30 minutes)
  • Complexity
    Difficult
  • Group size
    4 to 8 persons

This activity is not suitable online.

Description Long

An assessment grid serves as a guideline for the evaluation of projects. It consists of clearly defined criteria (e.g., creativity, feasibility, quality) and corresponding indicators (e.g., "innovative idea," "successful technical implementation") that help structure the evaluation process. First, the key evaluation categories for the project are identified. For each criterion, measurable indicators are defined. The grid is used by the group, peers, and project facilitators to assess quality and provide informed feedback.

This assessment grid (see link to the template file) serves as a model for developing a suitable grid for a specific module.

Preparation

  • Define criteria and indicators using the sample assessment grid.

Execution

It is recommended to follow the sequence below during the evaluation process.

  1. The creative team reflects on what went well and what could be improved.
  2. Peers or the audience provide constructive feedback based on the criteria and indicators.
  3. Project facilitators give constructive feedback and an initial evaluation.
  4. Project facilitators then provide a more detailed assessment, assign points, and give a final grade.

Hints from experience

  • Provide objectively measurable criteria and well-defined indicators so that the creative team can use them to guide the quality of their project. This also helps peers or the audience provide more transparent and understandable feedback, making it easier to assign points.

  • Use the four-eyes principle when evaluating and grading, involving a colleague in the process.

  • Adjust the group size according to the structure of the module and the overall workload. Groups that are too large may encourage “free-riding,” while groups that are too small may lead to stress.
