Target

The “Target” method allows participants to visually reflect on how well a workshop or project goal has been achieved. Using a target-style diagram, they assess their proximity to the goal and their personal contribution to the process.

Organisation

  • Duration
    Short (up to 30 minutes)
  • Complexity
    Simple
  • Group size
    1 to 10 persons

This activity is suitable online.

Description Long

The Target method is well suited to spontaneous, quick reflections at the end of workshops involving small to medium-sized groups. It is used to assess whether a previously defined goal – such as solving a problem – has been achieved during the session.

The target can be created on paper, a flipchart, or digitally. The outer ring represents low goal achievement, while the centre stands for full success. Each participant reviews their personal goal or the group agreement. They then assess the level of achievement by placing a mark on the target (e.g. using sticky dots or a digital tool). Afterwards, participants write a brief explanation for their chosen position and share it in the plenary. The target is photographed or digitally saved to document the reflection process. In addition to marking goal achievement towards the centre, participants may also indicate their personal engagement or contribution to the process.

Preparation

  • Preparation of the target should be adapted to the group size and the number of expected markings on the target (in this case: small, as it involves an individual).
  • Markers or sticky dots.
  • Online: Provide a suitable online whiteboard.

Execution

  1. Participants gather around the target (depending on the setup and marking materials used, this may be on a flipchart, on the floor, or on a table).
  2. They first re-read their individually defined goal.
  3. Then, participants independently assess their proximity to the centre and place their markings accordingly.
  4. To conclude, they write a brief explanation of their markings in a few words.
  5. The target can be archived either in physical form or digitally.
