Taboo Method

The Taboo Method is a creative warm-up technique that breaks the ice and playfully introduces participants to the topic of a workshop. Guessing terms related to the workshop topic encourages discussion, breaks down inhibitions, and focuses attention on the task at hand.

Organisation

  • Duration
    Short (up to 30 minutes)
  • Complexity
    Medium
  • Group size
    3 to 30 persons

This activity is suitable online.

Description Long

This method is ideal for starting a workshop. It’s a simple and fun way for participants to break the ice and connect with one another. The Taboo cards can be adapted to the workshop topic to stimulate participants and introduce the subject.

Two teams compete against each other. The aim is to guess the word on the card. Each team chooses one player to explain the word without actually saying it. To make the game more challenging, extra words that mustn’t be used can be added to the card. The first team to guess the word earns a point. In each round, players take it in turns to explain.

Preparation

  • Prepare the game cards, each with a single term. The terms should be related to the workshop topic.
  • Optionally, add taboo words that must not be used.

Execution

  1. The group is divided into two teams.
  2. The first team selects a player to explain the first word.
  3. The chosen player picks a card without looking at it beforehand.
  4. They then try to explain the term on the card, without using any of the listed taboo words, if applicable.
  5. The first team to guess the word correctly earns a point.
  6. The winning team takes the next turn.
  7. You can play as many rounds as you like.

Hints from experience

  • To increase the difficulty of the game, taboo words can be written on the cards that must not be mentioned.
  • As a variation, you can time each guessing round.
