Description Long

Public actions are spontaneous or planned performances designed to surprise people, spark reflection, or simply spread joy. They are often linked to a project or message, and though planned in advance, they are carried out with a playful, improvised touch. These actions are usually documented on film.

One common form is the flash mob (from flash, meaning “sudden”, and mob, meaning “crowd”) – a short, seemingly spontaneous gathering in a public place where participants do something eye-catching. Other examples include having breakfast with neighbours in the street, walking barefoot with friends through the city centre, or hosting a party in a car park rented via a parking meter.

Preparation

  • Clarify the objectives: What is the aim of the action? To raise awareness, encourage interaction, or simply to have fun?
  • Prepare and organise the action. Define responsibilities: Who is filming, who is taking part, etc.
  • Pay attention to filming procedures: set up camera, sound and lighting.

Execution

  1. The group meets at the agreed location, and final instructions are given.
  2. The action is carried out and filmed.
  3. Maintain an open mindset – passers-by may react differently than expected.
  4. Tidy up afterwards if any materials were used.
  5. Share photos and videos (via social media, website, or press).

Hints from experience

  • Use digital media (such as smartphones and messaging apps) for coordination and organisation.
  • Materials are often freely available, e.g. recycled materials.
  • Outdoors, a drone can be used for filming – if permitted.
  • If the space allows, several people can capture the action from different angles.
