Clarifying the Assignment and Choosing a Topic

This method is used to clearly define project goals and select a suitable topic. Targeted questions help ensure that the objectives are well defined and that the key focus areas are relevant to the target audience.

Organisation

  • Duration
    Medium (about 30-60 minutes)
  • Complexity

  • Group size

Description Long

To ensure the assignment is meaningful and can be carried out professionally, the following questions should be clarified at the outset:

  • Is the assignment or guiding question predetermined, or are you allowed to choose – or even develop – your own topic?
  • What are you particularly interested in?
  • What might be of particular interest to your audience?

Preparation

  •
  • Gather preliminary information about the project, the target audience, and possible topic areas.
  • Get an overview of the overall subject, find sources of inspiration, and exchange ideas.
  • Develop initial ideas.
  •

Execution

  1. If possible, choose a topic that is subject to controversy, not yet widely known to the target audience, or one about which the audience believes they already hold a clear opinion.
  2. Select a question or topic that offers a new perspective or alternative point of view.
  3. Proactively approach the project stakeholders and don’t hesitate to ask questions – this is the right moment to do so.
  4. Take the opportunity to raise all existing questions in a thoughtful and detailed manner. Where might there be helpful or potentially problematic aspects already present?

Hints from experience

  • Don’t let the difficulty of the task or well-known Oscar winners hold you back. A small, intimately told documentary – well crafted with the means available to you – can captivate your audience just as much. What truly matters is that you tell a compelling story based on a question or topic that genuinely interests you.
