The A-to-Z Method is a simple, creative technique for activating prior knowledge and collecting ideas in a structured way. Participants are asked to find a relevant word for each letter of the alphabet related to a given topic. This method is suitable for brainstorming, knowledge activation, or as an icebreaker in group settings. It can be used both digitally and in analogue formats.
The A-to-Z method can be conducted either in person or online. Participants are divided into small groups (ideally three to six people per group). In the online version, the groups work in breakout sessions on Zoom using a shared Miro board. In the analogue version, each group is given a flipchart displaying the letters A to Z and writes down topic-related terms. Groups have five minutes to work through the entire alphabet, finding a suitable word for each letter. Once time is up, all groups reconvene in plenary. The facilitator then compiles the results on a shared Miro board or flipchart. The aim of this method is to make existing knowledge visible and to open up new perspectives on the topic.
Example: Topic “Learning in the Future” A: Abstract B: Broad-based etc.
