Description Long

At the beginning of a workshop, it is helpful for both facilitators and participants to become familiar with the space and feel comfortable in it. When working with a large group in a limited space, it is also important to tune into the group dynamic. This method helps participants connect with the working environment and with one another. Through simple interactions and observation, a sense of belonging and a clearer understanding of group dynamics can emerge.

By quietly moving around and noticing their surroundings, participants explore the space together. These initial interactions allow them to ease into the group experience. Finally, the room can be adjusted, if necessary, to support the tasks ahead.

Preparation

  • Ventilate the room and ensure comfortable lighting.
  • Clear any obstacles to allow enough space for free movement.

Execution

  1. The method is introduced.
  2. Participants are invited to spread out in the room and take in the atmosphere.
  3. They are then encouraged to move around the space.
  4. From time to time, they should briefly pause in front of one another before continuing.
  5. Finally, the room can be adjusted as needed – for example, by moving furniture out of the way.

Hints from experience

  • Try this exercise yourself to help you prepare.
