Uploading: Capture prior knowledge

This method helps to reveal participants’ existing skills, experiences and ideas. At the same time, it encourages reflection on limiting beliefs and outdated concepts, allowing space for new visions and approaches to emerge.

Organisation

  • Duration
    Short (up to 30 minutes)
  • Complexity
    Simple
  • Group size
    1 to 100 persons

This activity is not suitable online.

Description Long

The aim is to identify existing resources and skills within the group and to reflect on any prior knowledge that may be limiting. This helps participants become more open to new perspectives and ideas. Surfacing existing insights is just as important as clarifying the task at hand.

Participants write down their prior knowledge, experiences and skills on large sheets of paper or Post-its. Limiting ideas or concepts are written on separate sheets and placed in a designated “letting-go” corner. A central poster provides an overview of all collected resources, which the group can add to and refer back to at any time. If this poster is digitised, it can be easily reused in later stages – for example, at a turning point in the process.

Preparation

  • Prepare the space and materials.

Execution

  1. The aim and process of the method are explained.
  2. Participants write down their skills, experiences and resources on large sheets of paper or Post-its.
  3. These notes are collected and grouped on a central poster.
  4. Participants are invited to write down any thoughts or concepts they find unhelpful on separate sheets and place them in the “letting-go” corner.
  5. The central poster is photographed or digitised so it can be used again in later phases.

Hints from experience

  • Depending on the group, it may feel unfamiliar to first let go of prior knowledge before opening up to something new.
