Crazy 8 – Deluxe (deutsch: Crazy 8 – Deluxe)

This method is a quick and effective creative technique in which eight ideas are sketched or described in a short space of time. It encourages spontaneous inspiration and is ideal for generating a variety of approaches to a given topic. Unlike the “Crazy 8” method, where each person works individually on their own sheet, “Crazy 8 – Deluxe” involves working together as a team on the sheets.

Organisation

  • Duration
    Short (up to 30 minutes)
  • Complexity
    Simple
  • Group size
    8 to 100 persons

Description Long

In the “Crazy 8 – Deluxe” method, a team works together on a continuous visual idea, with each person taking it in turns to develop the drawing. Each participant receives an A3 sheet divided into eight equal-sized squares. At the start, the group agrees on a central theme or a keyword from the “Opening” phase. Everyone then spends two minutes illustrating their interpretation of the theme in the first square. When the time is up, the sheets are passed clockwise to the next person. Each participant continues the drawing in the next square by adding to or modifying what’s already there. This process is repeated until all eight squares on each sheet are complete. Finally, the group discusses and reflects on the completed visual stories.

Preparation

  • A3 paper and a selection of pens are laid out.

Execution

  1. The facilitator explains the procedure and introduces the theme or keyword.
  2. Participants begin by drawing in the first square.
  3. After two minutes, the sheet is passed on.
  4. The next participant adds to the drawing in the following square.
  5. This process continues until all eight squares are filled.
  6. At the end, the completed sheets are presented to the group, and similarities, differences, and creative approaches are discussed.

Hints from experience

  • Participants are welcome to draw beyond the edges of the squares to encourage creativity.
  • The time per round can be adjusted to suit the topic and group dynamics (between 1 and 3 minutes).
  • The focus should not be on artistic perfection, but on playful expression.
  • The final discussion can be used to identify the best ideas or elements that could be carried forward into future projects.

Tools list

  • Paper and pencil
